To preserve the basin’s wildlife and forest resources, countries have defined and recognised areas of value, which are managed through legal or other arrangements. The Termit Mountains, for example, which straddle the regions of Zinder, Diffa and Agadez, abound with oryxes, addaxes and dama gazelles. Termit is one of the few locations in the world with a viable population of addaxes living in the wild. The protected areas are a tool for conserving the basin’s biodiversity and fall within the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, adopted at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. In the Lake Chad basin 30 geographical areas have been designated as protected areas and validated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Together they comprise an area of around 352,721 km². Alongside these wildlife reserves, there are forest reserves, which are either managed by local communities or by devolved or decentralised government services.
