Precipitation is the principal source of water, direct on the land surface to enable natural vegetation, as runoff in rivers, as replenishment of lakes and wetlands and finally also for groundwater recharge. The maps show, among others, rainfall stations and annual isohyets for different periods, as well as the hydrographic network. By choosing one particular rainfall station, the specific information will be displayed. In the Lake Chad Basin, the climate is tropical, with four climate zones corresponding to different isohyets. The basin is part the semi desert sahelian zone, with low monsoon precipitations in the north – below 100 mm/year, Chad, Libya and Algeria – and high monsoon precipitations in the south – 1500 mm/year, in the south of Chad and in Central African Republic. The climate is categorized in 4 four sub-types: The Saharan climate with less than 100 mm precipitation per year; The Sahelo-Saharian climate with a precipitation average between 100 mm and 400 mm per year; The Sahelo-Sudanian climate with a precipitation average between 400 mm and 600 mm per year; The Sudano-Guinean climate with a precipitation average between 600 and 1500 mm per year.
